The enlightenment of the afterthought
Tired, beaten down and low on sausages, the unfortunate hero gathers his sparse belongings in the light of the cold autumn morning and does indeed find the way back by pure luck. It could have been worse but it was pretty shit!
Well what went wrong in this bullshit example? Guess we're trying to say that even for a dayhike it's wise to carry some essentials: some warm clothing and something to keep you armed against the rain, like waterproofing your outdoor jacket or just bringing a rain cape which doubles up as a lean-to shelter in a pinch (don't forget to get some cordage too).
To carry the essentials, get a pack. A small one will do for a day trip, but for a planned overnighter it's best to get a tad bigger one, unless you consider yourself as a packmaster.
